This year’s one big resolution will be in the form of a personal mission statement: “Help others find happiness by inspiring, entertaining and modeling my own advice.” I have a list of goals that fit under this umbrella, and I’ve posted this new high level mission statement in my home office as a daily reminder. So what does “modeling my own advice” really mean?
I’ve been blogging and facebooking for over 4 years now. And those who know me best, know that I include myself in my own audience. In other words, I also write to motivate David Goad while I am trying to motivate others.
I need just as much help as anyone. I have moments of weakness, doubt, frustration and anxiety. I don’t achieve every goal when and how I planned. I have not yet become all I want to be. This is the great disclaimer on all the so-called advice I offer in my blog. I do not profess to be an expert and I am not certified by any authority that I know what the heck I’m talking about.
However, I am heartened by one thing I hear from many readers… that they are motivated by my actions, not my words. I don’t recommend anyone do anything that I am not willing to do myself. That’s what I mean by being a model. I want to be a player/coach out there on the field side by side with you… rather than broadcasting advice from afar.
I’m glad my friend Rich Hopkins recommended that I write a personal mission statement. It has helped clarify my purpose, and given me more drive to achieve the challenging goals I have set for 2013. Can you declare a mission before you make a checklist of goals for the coming year? If you do, please share as a comment below and we’ll help keep each other accountable.
I sincerely appreciate you reading and commenting on Short Stories with a Point in 2012. Have an awesome New Year my friends!
