I’m sitting here with a steamy cup of coffee, carefully contemplating my personal goals for 2013. I’m getting a head start now so I can literally hit the ground running on January 1. It took me almost the entire 2012 to check off last year’s goals, which stretched me beyond my comfort zone and hopefully had a positive impact on others.
As you decide your 2013 goals, feel free to steal my personal formula for success: “Make a decision, make it public and make it happen.” So here is my public declaration (specific dates and details to follow):
- Maintain excellence in my marketing role at Cisco
- Complete an Ironman 70.3 Triathlon
- Raise at least $3000 for MMRF
- Write and publish my second book
- Compete in the Toastmasters International Speech Contest
There are several mini-goals that go along with these biggies. I’ll make adjustments and do a few fun extras as opportunities present themselves. I also enjoy coaching others in speaking and running, but I’m not sure how to quantify that into a goal.
Can you write down 5 measurable goals that you will commit to? Consider what you can balance with your family, friends and day job, because big goals require more than time… they require an emotional investment. So try to pick some things that will pay you back in that department as well.
I am just a regular 51 year old dude with no superpowers. I’m no stronger, smarter or talented than you are. And in the last 4 years I have proven to myself that I am capable of far more than I thought I was. That’s why I believe you will surprise yourself as well. I really mean it… you can do this.
